Covariant elasticity for smectics A

چکیده
2014 A theory of static deformations of smectics A is presented, taking into account the large curvature deformations of the layers, but assuming that the variation in the thickness of the layers is small. The director n(r) and the layer phase function 03A6(r) (03A6 is constant on a given layer) are chosen as independent variables, but they have to be related by a relation, to which corresponds a Lagrange multiplyer. Permeation is taken into account. With the help of these variables, the bulk and boundaries equilibrium equations can be expressed simply, and the physical meaning of the Lagrange multiplyer is straightforward. The formulation is applied to the case of the stability of a cylindrical structure. It is found that the cylinders are unstable versus certain helical and sinusoidal deformations. Material properties of smectic layers and the formation of modulated and cubic smectic phases
2014 Models are proposed for a modulated smectic phase (Ã) and the cubic smectics (D and a nameless phase) that are based on the material properties of the single smectic layer such as curvature elasticity and boundary (or inversion wall) energies. They furnish criteria for the transformation of regular smectics (A, C) into these phases. J. Physique 48 (1987) 291-295 FTVRIER 1987, :
متن کاملTwo New Topologically Ordered Glass Phases of Smectics Confined in Anisotropic Random Media
Smectics in strained aerogel exhibit two new glassy phases. The strain both ensures the stability of these phases and determines their nature. One type of strain induces an “XY Bragg glass,” while the other creates a novel, triaxially anisotropic “m 1 Bragg glass.” The latter exhibits anomalous elasticity, characterized by exponents that we calculate to high precision. We predict the phase di...
متن کاملFree energy of liquid crystals
The construction of the free energy for liquid crystalline systems is presented using the same arguments as for solids in the linear theory of elasticity. The free energy is derived for nematics in the director representation and in the tensorial representation with the help of the group theory and for smectics in the director representation. The two free energies for nematics are compared. The...
متن کاملBogomol'nyi, Prasad, and Sommerfield configurations in smectics.
It is typical in smectic liquid crystals to describe elastic deformations with a linear theory when the elastic strain is small. In smectics, certain essential nonlinearities arise from the requirement of rotational invariance. By employing the Bogomol'nyi, Prasad, and Sommerfield decomposition and relying on boundary conditions and geometric invariants, we have found a large class of exact sol...
متن کاملShear flow induced polarization in ferroelectric smectics C
2014 The existence of ferroelectricity in the chiral smectic C phase has been established from polarization measurements in the presence of an electric field [1]. In this article we study the case where the polarization is created by applying a shear velocity parallel to the smectic planes : The helicoidal structure is distorted by the shear : The alignment effect induces the average dipoles in...
